Hip hip hooray to my Kid Literature family!

Heartiest congratulations to Kid Literature on their very first birthday! What an incredible year it has been.

The Kid Literature team has been a true inspiration to me throughout the last year, so I was highly delighted when Karen Emma Hall, Kid Literature’s talented founder and author/illustrator of Hello Teeny Pheeny, asked me to write a small piece describing my year with Kid Literature.

So where do I start?

Well, as a new indie author in the middle of producing my debut picture book for young children,  I was eager to meet like-minded people on Twitter to gain ideas and support. I met Karen – aka Peachy Emma – through Twitter over a year ago, and she told me about the new online group that she was about to launch to promote children’s literature. Wow! What a wonderful idea, I thought. I would love to be part of it!

So, like a devoted fan following her favourite pop band, I avidly started to follow – and soak up – all the content that was produced by Kid Literature. I loved to read and learn from the team’s  information, which flowed from the various Kid Literature platforms including its website, blog, Facebook page, Twitter account, Google Plus account and Pinterest boards.

The team has certainly succeeded in raising the profile of children’s literature by educating, informing and entertaining its readers.
I was drawn to the sincerity, passion and encouragement of Karen and her Kid Literature team: Carmela Dutra, Steve Conoboy, Cat Michaels, Carolin Palmer and Hilary Hawkes, and I soon became a keen supporter of – and contributor to – their cause.

Over the year, the team has promoted independent writers and illustrators while highlighting the importance of children’s literature.

It has treated us to a wealth of constructive writing, reading, drawing, activity and craft tips, beautiful photos and paintings, inspiring quotes and cute colouring pages,

which have made us want to delve deeper into the wonderful world of children’s literature – where we can set aside our adult troubles and set our imaginations free as we momentarily become children again.

Through Kid Literature, I have forged some lovely online friendships, and my indie published book Stonely’s Pet Dinosaur has been promoted by this positive group, which I really appreciate.

Above all, being a small part of the Kid Literature community has without a doubt raised my confidence as an author and producer of children’s picture books, and has shown me that I’m not alone on my profoundly rewarding (but sometimes solitary) journey of producing and promoting children’s literature.
